NASA & IBM Unveil Surya: The AI That Forecasts Solar Storms

NASA, in partnership with IBM, has launched Surya—a groundbreaking open-source AI model that predicts solar storms with unprecedented precision.

🔹 Accuracy Leap: Surya can forecast solar activity up to two hours in advance with 16% higher accuracy than previous prediction methods.
🔹 Massive Training Data: It was trained on nine years of high-resolution solar images from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.
🔹 Global Impact: Solar storms can disrupt satellites, GPS, power grids, aviation routes, and even threaten astronauts. By providing early warnings, Surya acts as a “space weather forecast” to protect critical infrastructure on Earth and beyond.
🔹 Open Access: Hosted on Hugging Face, the model is freely available to researchers worldwide—accelerating global collaboration in space weather science.

This fusion of AI + Space Tech demonstrates how advanced prediction models are no longer limited to finance, healthcare, or industry, but are becoming essential to planetary resilience..
